Every great destiny starts with a small step. A grand beginning of the college pleasantly took place in 2009 with four undergraduate courses. As the strength was inadequate, two courses were started. B.A English Literature was started with the strength of 16 students and 2 staff. In the year 2013, Post Graduate course was introduced. In the year of 2013, Department of English had 28 PG students, 61 UG students and 8 staff members. The year 2015 is highly significant in the history of St. Jerome’s College, as the University recognized the Department of English as the Research Department with the introduction of M.Phil Course. In 2018, Department of English reached its culmination. The University recognized the Department of English as the Research Centre for Doctoral Course. The Department of English of St. Jerome’s College is one among the few self financing Colleges in Kanyakumari District to offer P.hd Course. At present, the Department of English excels with 14 staff members, 180 UG students, 60 PG students, 6 M. Phil. scholars, and 4 Ph. D research scholars

Seminars and Conferences mark the growth of English department in a peculiar way. Every year Seminar or Conference is conducted to throw light on the recent methodologies in research and the latest trends in literature. Literary stalwarts, both national and international, are invited to facilitate the young minds. In the recent years, one day State level conferences reconstructed into one day National level conferences. Literary expertise like Saranya Francis, poet; Bama, writer; Dr. Thummapudi Bharathi were invited to the conferences. Paper presenters are invited from various colleges. The editorial board will select the papers and publishes it in the UGC recognized journal with ISBN number.

Every year Rev. Bro. Antonio Galli Memorial Guest Lectures are organized for the outgoing UG and PG students of the Department. Various resource persons are invited to deliver guest lectures in literature, personality development and healthcare. Last year, Rev. Fr. Suvakkin, Rev. Fr. Agnel Amalan, Rev. Fr. Antony Raj, Rev. Fr. Sambath, Dr. Leema Rose, Rev. Sr. Dorris, Prof. N. Krishnammal and Dr. Dolly delivered their lectures on a variety of areas
An Inter-cultural dialogue was organised with the student guests from Italy on 20.08.2018. The exposure broadened the outlook of students on Education, Career and Culture.
An Intensive NET/SET crash course was initiated and several topics were discussed by Dr. Leema Rose, Dr. Dunston, Mr. Joseph Iniyan and Mr. Daniel.
English Assembly is conducted every Friday. The Assembly is entirely conducted by the students. It gives the students a splendid opportunity to enhance the skill set of the students.
Academic Activities
Bridge Course
Department of English lends its helping hand to all the first year students of the College by conducting the Bridge course every year. Bridge course classes are held for one week, to enhance the communication skill of the students. Through various fun filled activities and programs, students are motivated to learn English. Main motif of bridge course is to make the students to converse in English in and out of classroom and to make them accustomed to College life.
Touchstone English Association [TEA]
Touchstone English Association was inaugurated in the year 2015. Every month a literary meet is conducted to instill the quest for enjoying literature in our students. The literary meets help the students to enlighten their knowledge in literature. Ideas acquired in TEA meetings helped students to present various Research Papers and publications.
